Objective TO study the clinical and radiological features and the therapeutic efficacy of intracranial cavernous hemangiomas. Methods The data from 36 patients with intracranial cavernous hemangiomas surgically treated by authors from January 2002 to September 2006 were analyzed retrospectively and a review of relevant literature was conducted. Results There were 33 patients whose cavernous hemangimos located in intra-axially, including 28 above asparamide and 5 below asparamide(3 cases whose lesions located in cerebellum and 2 in brain-stem).In this group, total tumor removal wasachieved in 31 cases, hemangioma encapsulation was operated on 1 case and the remain one rejected doing operation. Meanwhile, there were also 3 patients whose tumors located in extra-axially. In this 3 cases, it was only 1 case whose tumor was total removed with the other 2 incomplete tumor removed. Conclusions CT and MRI were the major preoperative diagnostic modalities, especially MRI did a very important effect. Microsurgical treatment is the first choice for those patients with intracranial cavernous hemangiomas, radiosurgery or conventional radiotherapy serve as a supplemental measure for the patients whose cavernous hemangiomas locate in cavernous sinus. The doubt on the method of Gamma Knife radiosurgery treatment is also exited.
