Study On The Anti-Inflammatory And Anti-Tumor Effects Of Shark Chondroitin Sulfate And Its Supersulfated Derivatives

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common systemic autoimmune disease, which is characterized by chronic polyarthritis symptom. According to the RA pathogenesis studies, anti-flammatory therapy has become an important treat principle. It is reported that glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) has anti-flammatory and anti-tumor effect in recent years. Shark chondroitin sulfate (SCS) and its supersulfated derivatives (SSCS) were selected as anti-rheumatoid arthritis and anti-tumor materials in our study.Shark cartilage polysaccharides mainly composed of chondroitin sulfate(SCS), keratan sulfate (KS) and hyaluronic acid (HA). All of them belong to the family of glycodaminoglycans (GAGS). The major SCS is chondroitin sulfate C (CSC) that is the polymer of disaccharide units, which are glucuronic acid connect with sulfated N-acetylgalactosamine by β1→3 glucosidic bond. And the disaccharide units are connect by β1→4 glucoside bond to each other, forming the liner chain polysaccharides. Supersulfated shark chondroitin sulfate(SSCS) was the polysulfated compound of hydroxyl on glucuronic acid and N-acetygalactosamine. Besides its treatment activities on coronary heart disease, angina, myocardial, neuralgia and hemicrania, SCS was found to have some other functions such as anti-rheumatoid arthritis activity.
