Mitral valve malfunction is one of the most common diseases of the heart. Mitral regurgitation (MR) is usually the result of close imperfect of mitral valve, and leads to blood supply insufficiency. As the development of up-to-date medical techniques, the ratio of operations in valvular repair and valvular replacement has made great progress. Quantitative analysis is critically important in assessing the degree of mitral valve regurgitation for surgical planning. Echocardiography is the most frequently used non-invasive diagnostic tool for the visualization of intra-cardiac blood flow. The advent of color Doppler flow imaging substantially enhanced the clinical diagnosis of heart of mitral regurgitation severity. According to this technique, many mitral regurgitation severity evaluation methods were developed improving the accuracy of mitral regurgitation diagnosis. Although numerous echocardiography techniques, both qualitative and semi-quantitative, have been developed,few single precise method is routinely used as a"reference standard"to determine the severity of mitral regurgitation.In this thesis, the main task is the extraction and the analysis of the mitral valve in the real time three-dimensional echocardiography: first of all, for the fast visualization of the 3D heart structures and the mitral valve, the heart is displayed by 3D texture mapping. Secondly, on the basis of the 3D rendering of the heart, the frames with special features are selected, then the constraint points for the construction of the pillar region contained mitral valve are marked interactively. The pillar region is used as the region constraint item for the Geodesic Active Contours (GAC), and next the mitral valve is extracted by the improved GAC in the level set frame.
