Teeth remaining little coronal tissue need to be treated with post and core. Conventional these posts are metal posts which have good physical characteristics, enough mechanical intension, and are easily to be machined. But metal posts also have some disadvantages, such as lighttight, poor aesthetic characteristic and corrodible. Some patients may be hypersensitive to the mental post. Moreover, metal posts have a high modulus of elasticity which can lead to tooth fracture ---- a irreversible failure.Fiber-posts are widely used in dental clinics these years. Fiber-posts are composite materials. They are composed of fibres of carbon or silica surrounded by a matrix of polymer resin, usually an epoxy resin. According to the different fibers used, fiber-posts can be divided into carbon-fibre posts, glass-fibre posts and quartz-fibre posts.Fiber-posts have good flexure strength, tensile strength, biological safty, corrosion resistence, aesthetic characteristic, radiopacity and can be easily removed from root canal. Fiber-posts have a modulus of elasticity similar to dentine. Fiber-posts flex under load and as a result distribute stresses between the post and the dentine. Even overloaded, fiber-posts will fracture prior to tooth, which lead to the decrease of the ratio of root fracture. In my clinical study, I choose patients whose teeth have been endodontically treated and use fiber-posts to retain the core and restoration. The effect is satisfactory.
