Mammary hyperplasia, known as the excessive proliferation of normal cells in thenormal tissue arrangement of the breast. It is an abnormal breast morphology that resultsfrom varying degrees of increase in number and the incomplete repair of old cells. InChinese medicine it falls within the category of "Breast Accumulation (Ru Bi)". MostWestern medical doctors feel that the problem arises when hormones fall out of balance.Clinically, the problem manifests as breast pain and lumps in the breast; commonly, thesufferer feels stuffiness and oppression in the chest area, is often depressed and easilyangered, typically there is restlessness, a bitter taste in the mouth, insomnia and apropensity to dream excessively.Chinese medicine believes that "Breast Accumulation" mostly arises from thoughtdamaging the Spleen, and anger damaging the Liver, the Qi of which then becomesblocked and growth (of the lumps) occurs; the most common syndromes for this disorderinclude Liver Qi stagnation, Imbalance of the Chong and Ren Vessels, and Co-mingling ofPhlegm and Blood Stasis. This research focuses on the use of auricular acupuncture in the treatment of 60cases of Liver Qi stagnation induced mammary hyperplasia. The auricular needles wereretained for 3-5 days, with 5 sessions, each broken by a three day rest period, considered to be one course of treatment. The control group was treated with the formula"Internal Formula to Eliminate Breast Accumulation (Ru Pi Xiao Nei Fu)", which was takenthree times a day just before the period. Two months after the treatments were started theparticipants were examined to determine the efficacy of the treatments. Results: Positiveresults were seen in with both groups; the overall success for the auricular treatment was73.33%, while that for the group taking the internal formula was 60%. The efficacy of usingauricular acupuncture was markedly better than that of the formula (P<0.05).Auricular acupuncture is mostly based on Chinese Medicine differential diagnosis, though some consideration is given to Western medical knowledge. Through the use ofthe stimulation of positive reaction points on the ear and points that correspond to internalZang-Fu organs, the self-regulatory mechanisms of the body are stimulated in order torealize the curative effect of the treatment, which is particularly effective in treating thepain. The technique is simple, convenient, safe and effective, making it well worthpopularizing.
