Euonymus alatus (Thunb.) Sieb. is a traditional Chinese medicine, and used as a drug for abdominal pain and amenorrhoea. Several studies have indicated that extracts of E. alatus (Thunb.) Sieb. have antihypertensive, hypoglycemic, and central analgesic activities. From the 95% ethanol extract of Euonymus alatus (Thunb.) Sieb., 19 compounds were separated by using open silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, open ODS column chromatography and preparative TLC, etc. On the basis of physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic analysis, 19 compounds were identified as follows: stigmast-4-en-3-one (1),β-sitosterol (2), 6β-hydroxy-stigmast-4-en-3-one (3), daucosterol (4), methyl 2,4-dihydroxy-3,6-dimethyl benzoate (5), methyl 2. 4-dihydroxy-6-methyl benzoate (6), vanillin (7), 7-methoxy-4-methylphthalide (8), 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-3,6-dimethyl benzoic acid (9), benzoic acid (10), (+)-usnic acid (11), (2R, 3R)-3,5,7,4'-tetrahydroxyflavanone (12), quercetin (13), kaempferol (14), 5, 7,4'-trihydroxyflavanone (15). epifriedelinol (16), lupeol (17), 3β-hydroxy-30-norlupan-20-one (18), n-octacosanol (19). Among them, compound 8 is first reported as a natural product, and compounds 5, 6, 7. 9, 11, 15 and 18 are reported from this genus for the first time. The trypan blue experiments in vitro showed that stigmast-4-en-3-one (1), (+)-usnic acid (11), lupeol (17) and 3β-hydroxy-30-norlupan-20-one (18) had growth inhibitory effects in HL-60 cells.
