ObjectiveThe purpose of the present study was to investigate the prevalenceof irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), depression, anxiety and also schoolstress among middle school students in Shantou. By comparing theirsdifferences in grade and gender, we aimed to explore the relations amongthe relations among middle school students' IBS with depressive mood,anxious mood and school stress. The findings of the study contribute topreyer and cure IBS of middle school students.MethodsA total of 1092 middle school students of Shantou urban area wererandomly selected from eighteen classes of six middle schools, with male615 and female 477. Those students were measured with the bowel symptomquestionnaire (BSO), hospital anxiety and depression Scale (HAD), andmiddle school stress test.Result1. Of all the respondents, the prevence rate of IBS was 14.55%, withmale 14.5%, and female 18.0%. The senior class students have a higher rateof IBS than junior class students.2. Of all the respondents, the prevence rate of depressive symptomswas 29.20%, and mild depression was 17.2%, which occupy 58.79% of all thepatiets. Females reported more frequent mild and moderate depression compared to males. Depression symptoms were found to differ by age andgrade. The mean score of depression trend to be increasing with grade,and there were significant differences at grade three according to gradeone and two, with P<0.05.3. Of all the respondents, the prevence rate of anxious symptoms was31.06%, and mild anxiety was 17.07%, which occupy 55.56% of all the patiets.Females reported more frequent mild and moderate anxiety compared to males.Anxiety symptoms were found to differ by age and grade. The mean scoreof anxiety trend to be increasing with grade, and there were significantdifferences at grade three according to grade one and two, with P<0.05.4. The total score and each subentries score all tend to be increasingwith grade, and there were significant differences at grade of school.The level of emphases middle school students' stress was higher thancommon middle school' s.5. The prevealenc rate of IBS tends to be increasing with gradetgether with depression, anxiety, and school stress. According to non-IBSrespondents, the IBS patients have a higher rate and score with depression,anxiety, and school stress.Conclusion1. The middle school students in Shantou have a higher rate (14.55%)of IBS than that of national average level. The senior high school studentshave a higher rate of IBS than that of the junior high school students.2. The middle school students in Shantou where have more studentswith depression and anxiety problems, have poorer mental health than thatof national average level. Luckily, most students only have milddepression or anxiety. It seen to that hhigh depression and anxity couldincrease the rate of IBS.3. High school stress level can increase the risk of IBS because the middle students with IBS have higher level of school stress in Shantounrban area.4. There were similar rate of IBS, depression, anxiety, and schoolstress with grade in Shantou urban middle school students. Thus depression,anxiety, and school stress may increase the risk of IBS.
