1 Studies on the chemical constituents and quality control of Radix phytolaccaeThe origin of Radix phytolaccae is legally used from the dried roots of Phytolacca acinosa Roxb. or Phytolacca americana L. according to Chinese Pharmacopoeia. It is widely used as a diuretic in traditional Chinese clinics. To discover new active and toxic compounds, a detailed phytochemical investigation was carried out on Radix phytolaccae, which resulted in the isolation of one new triterpenoid saponin, together with 7 known compounds.8 Compounds were separated from the 95% ethanol extract of t Radix phytolaccae by means of the recrystallization and the column chromatography on siligal gel, ODS and sephadex LH-20.Their structures were identified on the basis of physochemical properties and spectroscopic analysis as 3-β-[(β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4) -O-β-D-xylopyranosyl)]-2-hydroxy acinosolic acid-30-methyl ester (Shl-1) , 3-β-[(β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4) -β-D-xylopyranosyl)]-2-hydroxy acinosolic acid-30-methyl ester-28-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (shl-3) , 3-β-[(β-D-xylopyranosyl)]-2-hydroxy acinosolic acid-30-methyl ester (shl-5) , 3-β-[(β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4) -β-D-xylopyranosyl)]-2-hydroxy acinosolic acid-30-methyl ester-11-methoxy-28-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (shl-9) , palmitic acid monoglyceride (shl-7) , hypaphorine (shl-6) ,β-sitosterol and daucosterol. Among them, compound shl-9 was new triterpenoidal saponin, named phytolacacinoside A, and two compounds were isolated from Phytolacca acinosa Roxb. for the first time.A stable and repeatable HPLC method was established for the content of esculentoside H in Radix phytolaccae for the first time. The average recovery and RSD were 98.61 and 2.43%, respectively. 12 Samples, collected from different growing areas, were determined and the contents of esculentoside H in Radix phytolaccae were fluctuated from 0.05% to 0.36%. Therefore, the established method can be used for the quality investigation of Radix phytolaccae. 2 The studies on constituents of Isodon serraIsodon serra belongs to the Labiatae family, Isodon genus. The stems and leaves of the plants were used as anti-inflammatory, detoxication and antitumor in traditional Chinese clinics. To make further use of the Chinese herbal resources and find new antitumor compounds, the chemical constituents of Isodon serra were investigated.Six compounds were isolated from the 95% ethanol extract of Isodon serra and elucidated by their chemical properties and spectrometric data as ent-6α,11α-dihydroxy-6,7-seco-6,20-epoxy-1β,7-lactone-kaur-16-en-15-one, ent-1β,6α,7α,11α-tetrahydroxy-7β,20-epoxy-kaur-16-en-15-one, ent-6α-dihydroxy-6,7-seco-6,20-epoxy-1β,7-lactone-kaur-16-en-15-one, daucosterol,β-sitosterol and glucose.
