Objective: To examine the serum levels of testosterone and estradiol in the male patients withliver cirrhosis caused by chronic hepatitis B, and to study the relationships between syndrometypes of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) and sex hormones.Subjects and Methods: One hundred and forty-four male patients with liver cirrhosis causedby chronic hepatitis B were divided into six types according to the syndrome differentiation ofTCM. 32 healthy adult males with the equilibrium between yin and yang were chosen formatched control. Serum levels of testosterone and estradiol were measured byelectrochemiluminescence in all the 176 cases. Results: 1.Serum levels of testosterone in the liver cirrhosis group were lower than thehealthy control group, and serum levels of estradiol were just on the contrary (P<0.05).2.The serum levels of estradiol, from the lowest to the highest, were that of liver-depressiongroup, water retention group, dampness-heat accumulation group, liver-kidney yin deficiencygroup and blood stasis in collateral group (P<0.05). There was also statistical difference inserum levels of testosterone among the five groups (P<0.05). 3.Serum levels of testosteroneprogressively and significantly decreased from cirrhosis Child-pugh A grade to C grade, andthe serum levels of estradiol significantly increased from Child-pugh A grade to C grade. Conclusions: 1. The levels of serum testosterone and estradiol may offer a reference index tothe TCM syndromes in liver cirrhosis. 2. The levels of serum testosterone and estradiol arecorrelated to the extent of liver insufficiency and can served as a reference index ofimpairment of liver function.
