Objective To evaluate the preliminary efficacy and safety ofcompound Astragalus mongholicus granule in the 24-week treatment ofpeople living with HIV/AIDS. The effect on the function of T lymphocytewill also be studied..Methods 22 HIV infection confirmed patients (13 female, 9 male)were enrolled and researched in our study with the standard of CD4~+ cellcount>250 cell/μl and HIV RNA>2000 copy/ml, etc.Patients received an oral of compound Astragalus mongholicusgranule for 24 weeks. HIV RNA were tested at 0,24 week;CD4~+, CD8~+cells and cytokine(IL-2,IL-4,IFN-γ) were examined at 0, 8, 24 week;.Clinic symptom integration, blood routine tests, liver and kidney functionwere recorded at 0, 8, 16, 24 week. Adverse events were observed, too.Results The CD4~+ cells increased from 314±92 cell/μl to 331±135cell/μl at 24 week when compared to the baseline(0 week). IL-2 andIFN-γincreased markedly while IL-4 reduced. HIV RNA was slightlydeceased from 5.44±0.80 to 4.84±0.31 log copy/ml. The clinic symptomswere significant improved in most of the patients. The results of bloodroutine test, liver and kidney function were normal. No obvious adverseevents were observed.Conclusion These data indicated that Compound AstragalusMongholicus Granule have increased the number of CD4~+ cells, and theefficiency is 59.09%.The upgraded level of IL-2 and IFN-γwhiledecreased level of IL-4 indicated certain immune regulation functionexist. At the same time, Compound Astragalus Mongholicus Granule cansignificantly improve HIV infection symptoms, efficiency 63.36%. It cangain the patients' weight(efficiency 72.73%) and inhibit HIV replicationto a certain extent (efficiency 63.36%). No obvious side-effects wereobserver in our clinical trials.
