Purpose: To investigate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-9 and CD147 in human salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma(SACC) tissues and the correlation between MMP-9 and CD147, and to evaluate the clinical significance.Methods: The expression of MMP-9 and CD147 was examined by immunohistochemical method in human SACC tissues of 21 cases and normal human salivary tissues of 6 cases. The relationship between the expression and clinical-pathological behaviors was also analyzed. Follow-up data were statistically analyzed.Results: The expression of MMP-9 and CD147 in SACC tissues was higher than that in normal salivary tissues. Positive expression rate of MMP-9 and CD147 in SACC tissues was 76.2% and 81.0% respectively, significantly higher than 16.7% and 16.7% in normal salivary tissues (p<0.05, p<0.01 respectively). The staining intensity of MMP-9 and CD147 in SACC tissues was significantly associated with the clinicopathologic stage(p<0.01, p<0.05 respectively), but no distinct difference was found in other parameters. There was also a significant correlation in staining intensity between MMP-9 and CD147. The co-expression rate of MMP-9 and CD147 was 90.5%. The local recurrence of SACC correlated with the nerve invasion, the difference had markedly statistical significance(p<0.05), but no distinct correlation was found in other parameters. The distant metastasis of SACC correlated with histological type and clinical stage, the difference had markedly statistical significance(p<0.01, p<0.05 respectively), but no distinct correlation was found in other parameters. The survival rate of the patients had no significant relation with all the parameters.Conclusion: (1)MMP-9 and CD147 are obejective marks to estimate the behaviors of SACC. (2)The expression of MMP-9 and CD147 in SACC tissues correlates with clinical stage. (3) There is a significant positive correlation between the expression of MMP-9 and CD147. (4) The local recurrence of SACC correlates with the nerve invasion, and the distant metastasis of it correlates with histological type and clinical stage.
