[OBJECTIVE] To study the expression of receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) and amphoterin in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC).To analysis the relationship of RAGE and amphoterin and the clinicopathologic characteristis of LSCC to benefit the diagnosis ,treatment and prognosis of this disease.[METHODS] 37 cases of LSCC and its clinical date were collected. The expressions of RAGE and amphoterin were detected using immunohistochemistry method. The relationship of expressions of RAGE and amphoterin with the clinicopathologic characteristics of the tumor was analyzed. Tissues from 32 cases of adjacent of cancer and 14 cases of polyp of vocal cord were as the control group.[RESULTS] RAGE and amphoterin mainly located in cytomembrane and cytoplasm. The positive rates of RAGE in the LSCC and in the djacent of cancer and in the polyp of vocal cord were 56.8% and 25% and 0%,respectively.The difference was significant , P<0.01 . The positive rates of RAGE in LSCC tissues of patients with pTNMⅠ~Ⅱstages and in that of patients with pTNMⅢ~Ⅳstages were 35.0% and 82.4%,respectively.The difference was significant,p<0.05. The positive rates of RAGE in LSCC tissues of patients with cervical lymph node status and in which not were 83.3% and 44.0%,respectively.The different was significant, p<0.05. RAGE expression was positively correlated with the histological grade (r=0.444,p=0.006). The positive rates of amphotein in the LSCC and in the djacent of cancer and in the polyp of vocal cord were 83.3% and 75% and 71.4%,respectively.The difference was not significant , P>0.05. The expression of RAGE was positively associated with amphoterin(r=0.567,p<0.001).[CONCLUSION] There was significant correlation between the high level of RAGE expression and cell growth or metastasis or cell differentiation or prognosis of LSCC patients . Neither TNM stage, tumorigenesis, cervical lymph node status, nor grade was significantly related with the level of amphoterin expression. The interaction of RAGE and amphoterin is related to the genesis or development or metastasis of LSCC and may be used as potential markers for LSCC invasion and metastasis.
