Objective:To explore the effects of Atorvastatin calcium on metabolic status and inflammatory factors in metabolic syndrome(MS)and the roles of serum high sensitive C-reactive protein(hsCRP),tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)in the initiation and development of MS by detecting the levels of hsCRP,TNF-α,serum lipids and insulin resistance index.Methods:60 inpatients with MS were enrolled from department of cardiology and endocrinology in the first affiliated hospital of Guangxi Medical University and were randomly divided into the treatment group(30 cases)and the control group(30 cases).Patients in the control group accepted conventional therapy(anti-hypertension agents and diabetes regimens)and patients in the treatment group were prescribed Atorvastatin calcium 10mg,Qn,except the conventional therapy above mentioned. The duration of the treatment lasted 4 weeks. The levels of serum hsCRP,TNF-α,fasting serum lipids, glucose and insulin were measured both before and after treatment. The insulin resistance index was calculated in 30 healthy subjects and 60 patients with MS.Results:(1)Levels of serum hsCRP and TNF-αin MS group were higher significantly than normal subjects(3.27±0.44mg/l vs 1.18±0.85mg/l, 19.85±8.74pg/ml vs 12.08±2.84pg/ml).Serum TC,TG,LDL-C and HOMA-IR in patients with MS was higher obviously than those in normal subjects(P<0.05 or 0.01),whereas HDL-C was lower(P<0.05).(2)Levels of serum hsCRP, TNF-α,TC,TG,LDL-C and HOMA-IR decreased and attained statistics significance in patients with MS after Atorvastatin calcium treatment, Whereas significant improvement wasn't found in the control patients with MS. (3)Levels of Serum hsCRP,TNF-αwere positive correlation with those of TC, TG,LDL-C and HOMA-IR significantly in patients with MS,but is negative correlation with HDL-C.The more the risk factors were, the higher the level of serum hs-CRP was.The decrease of serum hsCRP and TNF-α's levels didn't parallel with the change of TC,LDL-C.Conclusions:(1)Levels of serum hsCRP,TNF-αincrease obviously in patients with MS.It suggests that Serum hsCRP and TNF-αplay an important role in the initiation and development of MS and that MS may be a sort of low-grade inflammatory state.Inflammatory factors, serum lipoids with insulin resistance(IR)might interact in the initiation and development of MS.(2)The results show that Atorvastatin calcium can not only decline the levels of lipids and improve IR,but also decrease significantly the levels of hsCRP,TNF-αand act as a anti-inflammatory agent in MS.
