Objective: In recent years infections caused by community-acquired MRSA have increased remarkably. CA-MRSA infections have been a serious threaten to healthy children. The few studies have assessed healthy members of the community nasal carriers of CA-MRSA. As a result we we conducted this study to evaluate the prevalence of nasal carriers of CA-MRSA in Chengdu China. Methods: we have isolated S. aureus from nasal swabs of healthy children from five kindergartens in Chengdu from September, 2005 to December, 2005 and obtained questionnaires. Then we cultured S. aureus and took Bauer-Kirby on Mueller-Hinton medium and the agar dilution method antibiotic susceptibility testing to determine CA-MRSA isolates. All of the S. aureus were detected of the mecA gene. Results: There were 801 children enrolled in the study. Overall 147 children (18.35%) were colonized with S. aureus, 9 (1.1%) children were colonized with CA-MRSA, and 5 S. aureus isolates were BRSA.All of the 9 CA-MRSA isolates were positive for the mecA gene, in addition the remain 38 S. aureus (25.8%) were also positive for the mecA gene. Among 9 CA- MRSA, 6 CA-MRSA strains were multiresistant. And all of thel47 SA, 45 strains (30.6%) were multiresistant. Conclusion: CA-MRSA nasal colonization is present among Chengdu China healthy children. These CA-MRSA isolates have different resistant characteristic from the previous study determined and may be a serious threaten to public especially healthy children.
