Objective: To investigate the modulation effects of Shenmai (SMI) injection on systemic inflammatory reaction syndrome (SIRS) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) SD rats induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP).Methods: Ninety-six SD rats were randomly divided into SMI group (n=32) in which SMI injection was injected at dose of 5ml/kg, normal sodium (NS) group (n=32) in which NS was injected at dose of 5ml/kg, and normal group (n=32) in which the rats received sham operation and nothing was injected, on 12, 24,36,48h after CLP , cytokines (TNF-a, IL-6,IL-8), WBC, CRP, rectal temperature (RT) were determined, and general state of health (action, spirit, skin, breath, etc) were observed. Results: TNF-a, IL-6, IL-8, CRP in SMI group were obviously lower than those of NS group (P<0.01) at a time points after CLP, while WBC and RT were higher (P<0.01 or P<0.05). General state of health (action, spirit, skin, breath, etc) were ameliorated compared with NS group. Conclusion: Our study indicates that SMI injection has marked effect on protecting SIRS/MODS rats in the early stage, the mechanism might be related with the lowering of cytokine level and improving of the immune and stress of body.
