Objective To observe the effects of schisandrone on learning and memory abilities and on CAT, SOD and GSH-Px activities in the brain of rats with Alzheimer-like disease, and explore possible preventive and therapeutic effects of schisandrone on AD. Methods Thirty male SD rats were equally randomized into three groups: blank control group, AD model group and schisandrone intervention group. The animal model of AD was established by injecting Aβ25-35 into the lateral cerebral ventricle of rats. The escape latency of the rats tested in Morris water maze was recorded, and CAT,SOD and GSH-Px activities in the rat brain were detected by chemical colorimetry. Results The escape latency was significantly longer, and CAT, SOD and GSH-Px activities in the brain tissue were lower in model group than those in control group. The escape latency was significantly shorter, and CAT, SOD and GSH-Px activities in the brain tissue were higher in drug group than those in model group. Conclusions Schisandrone can markedly enhance learning and memory abilities in rats with Aβ25-35-induced dementia, presumably by raising activity of the antioxidase system and improving the scavenging of ROS.
