Objective: To study the preventive effect of lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) on renal calcium oxalate stone formation in rats and discuss the mechanism. Methods: 1. Male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were established renal calcium oxalate calculi model. 2. The different dose of LBP, medlar soak and apozem was given. The calcium oxalate crystallization, the renal cell apoptosis and the renal free radical level were detected. 3. The relationship of the renal cell apoptosis index, the renal free radical level and the calcium oxalate crystallization grade in the kidney tubule was determined. To realize the inhibitory effect and the mechanism of LBP on calcium oxalate crystallization. Results: The score of renal calcium oxalate crystallization of LBP group (50 mg/kg·d, 100mg/kg·d) decreased 27.6% and 34.5% (P<0.05). SOD of renal increased 15.0% and 28.7%. MDA was reduced 28.9% and 35.6%. apoptosis index of kidney tubule epithelium was reduced 40.9% and 53.3%(P<0.05) compared with the ethylene glycol drinking group. The score of renal calcium oxalate crystallization of 12% ,25% medlar soak and apozem was reduced 38.7%, 54.8% and 48.4%, 58.1%(P<0.01) compared with the ethylene glycol drinking group. Conclusions: LBP can reduce the formation of renal calcium oxalate crystallization. The mechanism is to protect from damage by free radical and reduce the apoptosis of renal tubular epithelial cell by hyperoxaluria.
