PurposeTo assess the effect that changes in sex hormone levels on intraocular pressure(IOP) in ovariectomized rabbits, and to investigate if a relationgship existed between sex hormone and IOP. and to explore the possible mechanisms.MethodsTwenty heathy new zeal rabbits were divided randmly into experimental group and control group. Ten rabbits were ovariectomized in experiment group and the other ten rabbits undergone the same procedures without ovariectomization. Serum levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone were measured by chemiluminescent immunoassay. Intraocular pressures were measured with Schoitz tonometer. SPSS 12.0 was used for statistical analysis.Results1.sex hormone level: In experimental group, serum estrogen levels was 301.4±18.5pmol/l, 253.1±17.3pmol/l, 224.9±19.4pmol/l, 228.3±14.7pmol/l, 235.5±16.2pmol/l in the day before operation and in the the day before operation, the 7th, 14th, 21th, 28th day after operation, respectively. serum progesterone levels was 137.6±14.5nmol/l, 101.5±18.6nmol/l, 98.4±13.9nmol/l, 98.4±13.9nmol/l, 112.5±16.8 nmol/l in the day before operation and in the the day before operation, the 7th, 14th, 21th,28th day after operation, respectively. serume stosterone levels were 0.324±0.072nmol/l, 0.576±0.083nmol/l, 0.732±0.054nmol/l, 0.853±0.092nmol/l, 0.821±0.072nmol/l in the day before operation and in the the day before operation, the 7th, 14th, 21th, 28th day after operation, respectively. All three serum sex hormone levels decreased statistically in each postoperative tests, comparing to their preoperative tests. Comparing the experimental group to the control group, no significant difference was found in preoperative sex hormone levels, but significant difference did excited in each postoperative tests.2. the intraocular pressure(IOP): In the experimental group, the IOP before surgery was 17.7±1.80mmHg, it was 20.9±2.64mmHg, 23.3±3.52mmHg, 20.7±2.87mmHg, 18.5±2.51mmHg in 1st week, 2nd week, 3rd week and 4th week after surgery, respectively. In the control group, the IOP before surgery was 17.5±1.71mmHg, it was 18.0±1.45mmHg, 18.4±1.86mmHg, 18.1±2.00 mmHg, 18.2±1.27mmHg in 1st week, 2nd week, 3rd week and 4th week after surgery, respectively. In the experimental group, the IOP in the 1st week, 2nd week, 3rd week after surgery was significant higher than that before surgery. But in the 4th week, this difference did not exist. Compairing the experiment group with control group, the IOP in the 1st week, 2nd week, 3rd week after surgery had significant difference, but the IOP before surgery and in the 4th week after surgery had no significant difference. In the control group, the IOP before surgery and that after surgery had no significant difference. 3. correlation analysis: in the experimental group, coefficient correlation was -0.685( p = 0.029, p<0.05) among IOP and E2, -0.843(p = 0.002, p<0.05) among IOP and Prog, 0.432(p = 0.213, p>0.05) among IOP and Testo. In the control group, coefficient correlation was -0.104(p = 0.774, p>0.05) among IOP and E2, -0.547(p = 0.102, p>0.05)among IOP and Prog, -0.168(p = 0.642, p>0.05)among IOP and Testo. ConclusionsAfter ovariectomization, the serum E2 and Prog decreased and Testo increased markedly. IOP after ovariectomization increased with its peak at two weeks after surgery and recoved to its preoperative level at the fourth week. correlation analysis showed that IOP had a negative correlation with serum E2 and Prog, but no correlation with Testo.
