Objective: This study aimed to determine whether the biliary levels of cytokines is valuable for diagnosis of acute cholangitis(AC) and associated with extent of AC by measuring biliary interleukin-6(IL-6),interleukin -8(IL-8),tumor necrosis factor-а(TNF-а)in patients. Methods: 42 nonconsecutive patients undergoing ERCP or operation in our hospital between November 2006 and August 2007 comprised the study group. There are 27 patients in AC group and 15 patients in control group. AC group's bile was aspirated within 72 hours and control group's within 1-5 days after hospitalization . IL-6,TNF-а,IL-8 were measured using an ELISA technique. Results: AC group's biliary IL-6,IL-8,TNF-аwere significantly higher than control group(p<0.001).Moreover, severe group's biliary IL-6 and TNF-аwere higher than mild group's(p<0.001), severe group's biliary IL-8 higher than mild group's(p>0.05)Conclusions: This study suggests that biliary IL-6,IL-8,TNF-аhave participated inflammation reaction of AC. They may be markers for AC and useful for predicting the degree of AC.
