Objectives:The aim of this study is①to investigate the serum leptin concentrations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease(COPD)and health Chinese people and assess the relationship between serum leptin concentration and fat mass, gender, age,MAC,MAMC,blood gas anlysis,etc.②to analyze the correlation and the interaction of the serum leptin level and the nutrition index.Make basic investigations for further understanding of its physiological functions and effects to human metabolism. Methods:The study population consisted of 31patients with COPD,and 31health controls. We measured the body height, body weight, chest circumference, abdomen circumference, triceps skinfold thickness, etc. And with corresponding formulas calculate BMI,IBW%,FAT%,MAMC,etc. We tested the serum leptin by immunoradiometric analysis.Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 12.0Results:①COPD group compared with the normal control, their difference among subscapularis skinfold thickness, upper arm middle circumference,BMI,IBW%,arm muscle circumference, serum leptin level have statistical significance.③Most of the index include subscapularis skinfold thickness, triceps skinfold thickness, hematoglobin, chest and abdomen circumference, upper arm middle circumference,BMI,IBW%,arm muscle circumference, serum leptin level except lymphocyte,FAT%were significantly different amang COPD patients and normal control(p<0.01 or p<0.05).③Body height, body weight, chest circumference, abdomen circumference, triceps skinfold thickness,skin-fold thickness of subscapular angle,Middle upper arm circumference,BMI,IBW%,MAMC,serum leptin concentrations of patients without malnutrition were significantly higher than patients with malnutrition(p<0.01 or p<0.05).④The concentration of serum leptin positively correlated to the chest circumference, abdomen circumference, triceps skinfold thickness,skin-fold thickness of subscapular angle,Middle upper arm circumference,BMI,IBW%,MAMC,(p<0.01) Conclusions:①The concentrations of serum leptin was significantly higher than normal control, and some index of nourishment such as BMI,IBW%,FAT%,etc.were significantly lower than normal control and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease patients exist nutritional disturbance②main nutritional index and serum leptin were all significantly higher than malnutrition group, meanwhile it has no significant deviation of most nutritional index between un-malnutrition group and normal control.③The concentration of serum leptin positively correlated to the chest circumference, abdomen circumference, triceps skinfold thickness,skin-fold thickness of subscapular angle,Middle upper arm circumference, BMI,IBW%,MAMC,indicate that the disease of COPD itself has a significant effect on the serum leptin and nutritional index.④The serum leptin level and the serum albumin level showed negative correlation in the COPD malnutrition group.
