Objective To detect serum content of vascular endothelial growth factor in diabetics and discuss its effect in diabetic retionopathy and diabetic nephropathy. Methods Serum content of VEGF was measured by ELISA in 91 diabetics and 30 volunteers. The relationship between serum content of VEGF and metabolic disorder of glycose and lipid was also investigated. Results 1.Compared to control group(68.79±25.63 pg/ml),VEGF was significantly higher in non-retinopathy diabetic group(97.05±28.70 pg/ml), nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy group(158.49±71.34 pg/ml)and proliferative diabetic retinopathy group(123.35±68.27 pg/ml).(P<0.05, P<0.01,P<0.01).Compared to nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy group, VEGF was significantly lower in non-retinopathy diabetic group and proliferative diabetic retinopathy group(P<0.01,P<0.05),but there was no difference between non-retinopathy diabetic group and proliferative diabetic retinopathy group.2.Compared to control group(68.79±25.63 pg/ml),VEGF was significantly higher in diabetic without nephropathy group(108.74±37.41 pg/ml)and nephropathy group(142.04±76.96 pg/ml)(P<0.01,P<0.01) Compared to diabetic without nephropathy group,VEGF was significantly higher in nephropathy group(P<0.01).3.Compared to non-vascular complications diabetic group(96.12±29.48 pg/ml),VEGF was significantly higher in complicating retinopathy and nephropathy diabetic group(145.43±79.12 pg/ml)and diabetic retinopathy group(130.62±40.46 pg/ml)(P<0.01, P<0.05).but there was no difference between diabetic nephropathy group(103.10±25.71pg/ml)and non-vascular complications diabetic group, also there was no difference among nephropathy group, diabetic retinopathy group and complicating retinopathy and nephropathy diabetic group. 4.Serum VEGF was positively correlated with glycosylated hemoglobin, urine albumin excretion rate, fasting plasma glucose,2 hour plasma glucose, serum creatinine and low-density lipoprotein.Their Pearson Correlations were:0.304, 0.298,0.335,0.219,0.190,0.234(p=0.003,p=0.004,p<0.001,p=0.016, p=0.037,p=0.01)Conclusion 1.Serum content of VEGF was significantly higher in diabetic microangiopathy, especially in diabetic retinopathy, this demonstrated that VEGF placed an important role in the nosogenesis of diabetic microangiopathy.2.The metabolic disorder of glycose and lipid was an important factor in the excessive generation of VEGF.
