Objective: Uremia is a systemic disease, which can lead to different degree changes in each organ. There were a large number of researches for uremia brain, heart, lung, stomach intestine, skeleton, et al, but there were a few researches for uremic liver damage up to now. Pathologic diagnosis is still regarded as the"gold standard"for uremia liver damage. But it wasn't widely used in clinic for it's invasion and high cost. Recently ultrasonic integrated backscatter which is non-invasive, cheap and convenient has been extensively applied in diagnosing liver diseases. The study was designed to investigate the value of integrated backscatter in early diagnosis of uremic liver damage. Methods: On-line analysis of hepatic IBS was performed in 86 uremia patients and 60 healthy adults. According to the length of kidney, uremia group was divided into two parts (A group<8cm and B group≥8cm). Each hepatic section was divided into three parts according to the depths (near, middle and far fields). Then the measurement of IBS in different fields was performed respectively and the real value of IBS was standardized by average TGC values. The IBS values of renal parenchyma and sinus were measured in uremia group. The ratio was defined as the revised IBS(IBS%) of renal parenchyma. Results: The hepatic IBS values of uremia group were higher than that of normal control group, and the difference was obviou(sP<0.05). But there was no significant difference among the near, middle and far fields IBS of uremia group(P>0.05). positive relationship was founded between the revised IBS of renal parenchyma and the hepatic IBS values in uremia group, its correlation was separately r=0.514, P=0.035 (near field), r=0.532, P=0.028( middle field)and r=0.49, P=0.046(far field). Conclusions: The hepatic IBS values of uremia group were higher than that of normal control group, so uremia can result in liver damage, which is a diffuse disease. Uremic liver damage has a close relationship with the course and degree of disease. IBS can be regarded as a non-invasive method in early diagnosing uremic liver damage.
