Panax Notoginseng(PN) is one of the precious traditional medicinal herbs in China. Saponin is the major active component in PN. The content of total saponins can reach to 12 %, and ginseng Saponin Rg1 and Rb1, Panax Notoginseng Saponin R1 are the highest. In addition, it contains other components of non- saponin, such as naphtha, flavonoid, glucide, etc. In recent years, PN is widely used to dialecticly therapy of medical and surgical diseases. The PN has not only the traditional efficacies of hemostasia, enriching the blood, detumescence and acesodyne, regulating the blood sugar and blood greasein in double directions, but also other efficacies, such as anti-thrombotic, anti-fibrosis active, anti-inflammation, anti-tumor, and so on. It plays a tremendous role in various kinds of Clinic applications. It has a broad application prospect in the future.In this paper, a systematical study on the process of the extraction and purification of Panax Notoginseng total saponin was given. Firstly, a method combining decompressing inner ebullition extraction and macroporous resin separation was developed to extract and purify total saponin of the Panax Notoginseng. Secondly, the optimal conditions of the extraction and purification were studied experimentally. Finally, the crystallization method was used to purify the saponin further. The results show that the processes of the extraction and purification in our experiments have specific advantages and higher purity and yield compared with some other traditional methods.Innovation points of this technic are: 1) the method combining decompressing inner ebullition extraction and macroporous resin separation has the advantages of fast speed extraction, omitting the processes of water precipitation or alcohol precipitation, higher yield and efficiency, and good product quality in comparison with traditional methods. 2) it improved the extraction method of the themosensitive component of Rbj. 3) applying double column crystallization method, we could get higher purity of Panax Notoginseng saponin and keep higher product yield. Then it is a good basis for further separation of saponin.
