Background:Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common endocrine disorder affecting women in reproductive ages.It is estimated that the prevalence of this disease is about 5-10%.The main characteristics of polycystic ovary syndrome are chronic anovulation/oligovulation,clinical or biochemical hyperandrogenism and polycystic ovaries(the Rotterdam ESHRE/ASRM-sponsored PCOS consensus workshop group,2004a).Polycystic ovary syndrome not only causes serious effects on reproductive function, but also results in a series of metabolic disorders, such as, insulin resistance(IR),hypercholesterolemia, hyperlipidemia. What is more, the health risk in the future is worrying, especially 2 type diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. As a systematic disease, clinical experts pay attention on polycystic ovary syndrome, however, the etiology and detailed pathophysiology of this disease are still unknown.Several previous studies indicated that psychological and physiological factors were closely associated with polycystic ovary syndrome, and maybe were the important incentives of PCOS and leaded to the long-term complications. So far,the studies about psychological factors, physiological factors, conditions of daily life are few and unsystematic. Therefore our study is designed to analyze the psychological and physiological status as well as conditions of daily life, and to evaluate its role in the etiology and pathophysiology of polycystic ovary syndrome. Objectives:To evaluate the psychological, physiological status and conditions of daily life in PCOS subgroup,non-PCOS subgroup and healthy control. To asses the roles of these factors in the etiology and pathophysiology of PCOS.Methods:â‘ 300 women of reproductive age with PCOS were recruited in center for reproductive medicine of Shandong Provincial Hospital. The diagnosis of PCOS was based on the criteria of Rotterdamâ‘¡A total of 300 age-matched infertile women without PCOS were enrolled in the study from the same center for reproductive medicine. All these patients had routine endocrine examinations and underwent baseline ultrasonographic checks.Women with irregular menstrual cycles, abnormal endocrine findings, polycystic ovaries visualized by the transvaginal ultrasound were excluded from the study.â‘¢Normal controls comprised of 270 patients. They were selected from the gynecological outpatient clinics and community outreach describing the study.Women with irregular cycles and/or clinical manifestations of hyperandrogenism were excluded. All these women accomplished the SDS,SAS and designed questionnaire after given detailed explanations. Results:â‘ The scores of women in PCOS subgroup were significantly higher than the grades in non-POCS subgroup and healthy control.â‘¡The analysis aiming at the negative psychological factors indicated that except for fear, the occurrences of anxiety, depression, sorrow and nervousness was obviously higher than that of healthy control.â‘¢The regression analysis indicated that the variances could partly be accounted for by duration of marriage, education, residential district, recurrent natural abortions, irascibility, disharmony of kindred et al.Conclusion:The psychological well-being of infertile women declined significantly, especially for women with PCOS.Duration of marriage, education, residential district, recurrent natural abortions, irascibility, disharmony of kindred, nervousness of daily life had adverse effects on the psychological and physiological status.
