Background:Breast cancer is now the most common malignant tumor seen in women. It is a kind of systemic disease that is severely harming women's physical and psychological health and even fatal.Patients often deplore the feeling of mutilation after the operation of the breasts. The presence of the nipple-areola complex (NAC) seems fundamental to marking the identity of the breast, although very few psychological studies have been published[4].NAC-preserving surgery approaches are now becoming more and more important. Objective: To study the feasibility of NAC-preserving surgery approaches and assist in patient selection for NAC preservation. Methods: A PubMed database literature search was performed. Other references were derived from the Fulltext Database of Chinese Journals. NAC involvement is correlated with preoperatively available clinical data. Clinical experiences from different institutions were summarized, expecting to assist in patient selection for NAC preservation. Conclusions: The balance of evidence suggests that nipple and areola preserving surgery approaches are appropriate in selected cases with early breast cancer; Further research is required to define those patients in whom preserving nipple and areola might be appropriate.
