Euonymus mupinensis Loes.et Rehd (EM), a member of Euonymus genus in the family Celastraceae, is widely distributed in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces and is used in folk medicine to relieve pain; treat rheumatism, edema and impairment caused by overstrain.Due to its remarkable therapeutic effects, the researches on chemical constituents, clinical application and pharmacological actions of EM are increasing in recent years. For the purpose of seeking its bioactive constituents and improving its preparation quality, we further examined the constituents and bioactivities of EM rattans. The dried and pulverized rattans of EM were percolated with 95% ethanol. Four fractions were obtained after the ethanol extract had been successively re-extracted by petroleum ether (LSJF1), dichloromethane (LSJF2), ethyl acetate (LSJF3) and n-butanol (LSJF4).Pharmacological researches were carried out to study the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of the LSJF4 fraction with different models. And the results indicated that the LSJF4 fraction, with the dosage of 250.8 mg/kg, have significantly anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities on mice.Repeated Silica gel column chromatography and Sephadex LH-20 gel column chromatography of LSJF2 fraction of EM yielded compounds I-VIII. The structures of compounds I-VI have been determined by physicochemical properties and spectral analysis asβ-sitosterol (I), wilforlide A (II), wilforlide B (III), olean-12-en-3,29-diol (IV), 3-hydroxy-2-oxo-3-fridelen-20α-carboxylic acid (V), 3β,22α-dihydroxy-olean- 12-en-29-oic acid (VI). And the compound VI was isolated from this plant for the first time.In addition, recent advances in the research of chemical constituents and pharmacological roles of Euonymus genus were reviewed.
