PURPOSE:The aims of this study were to identify levels of serum total immunoglobulin E (IgE) in patients with different stages of coronary atherosclerotic artery diseases and its clinical significance.METHODS:117 in-hospital patients admitted to the department of Cardiology of the Second affliated hospital,Zhejiang University Colledge of Medicine from July 2008 to February 2009 were enrolled, according to the including criteria. All patients accepted angiography and was devided into CHD group(n=78) and non-CHD group(n=39).The CHD group was subgrouped into three groups, patients with stable angina pectoris(SAP, n=22),unstable angina pectoris(UAP,n=42) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI,n=14).Patients clinical characteristic, including age, gender, body mass index(BMI),smoking, hypertension,DM were recorded.IgE were measured by fluorescence enzyme immunoassay and serum concentration of other biomarkers such as total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C),low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),C-reactive protein(CPR) were measured with enzymatic methods at the clinical laboratory center of our hospital. All tests were performed by experienced technicians of laboratory.RESULTS:Serum IgE levels were significantly higher in CHD patients than non-CHD subjects(CHD vs non-CHD:71.09±35.74 vs.44.12±17.45IU/ml,mean±SE,P<0.01).In the subgroup of the CHD,patients with UAP had higher serum IgE levels than those with SAP(UAP vs SAP:66.25±37.43 vs.55.82±11.07 IU/ml,mean±SE,P<0.01).Among patients with acute coronary syndrome(ACS),AMI patients had a tendency of higher IgE than the UAP subjects(AMI vs UAP:112.78±16.83 vs.66.25±37.43 IU/ml, mean±SE,P>0.05),although not statistically significant.CONCLUSIONS:Elevated serum IgE levels in CHD patients suggests that IgE may participates in the pathogenesis of coronary atherosclerotic heart disease. This study provides a new direction in further research of its pathogenesis, but the mechanism were remain investigated.
