ObjectiveIn order to give some suggestions for the works of elderly apartment to improve sleep quality and life quality, the status of sleep quality of the elderly lived in elderly apartment was described, and the effect factors of sleep quality in elderly was analysed.MethodsThe Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI, by Dr. Buysse. et, Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical and Translational Science and Director of the Neuroscience Clinical and Translational Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine), the self-made general questionnaire and questionnaire of effect factors of sleep quality were used to investigate the elderly in Shenyang Elderly Apartment. Inclusion criteria included living longer than 1 month in the elderly apartment, age>65 years, communication barrier-free, willing to take part in this research. From September 2008 to November 2008, the researchers adopt one-on-one,face-to-face interview method to conduct a survey of 179 old people in Shenyang Elderly Apartment. By using SPSS13.0 statistical software for data entry and statistical analysis, this text described demographic characteristics of the elderly in elderly apartment and the status quo of sleep quality, analyzed the effect factors of sleep quality by applying the single factor and multiple linear regression methods, and classified and summarized the interview data by categorization method of qualitative research.ResultsAmong the 179 old people, 104 people have high quality sleep, but other 75 people have troubles in sleep, about 41.8 percent of the total. In demographic data, gender and income are associated with sleep quality of the elderly. The sleep quality of old man was better than old woman, and the sleep quality of old people with high income was superior to lower income group and zero-employment elderly. After single-factor analysis, find oneself changes in sleep quality, suffering from disease, difficulty with initiating sleep, early awakening, easy to wake up and then difficult to fall asleep, dreaming, anxiety, acquiring sleep knowledge, family concern, loneliness, worry about sleeping well, worried about future, the light interference, noise, room temperature and humidity, taking medicine regularly, the use of hypnotic drugs, leisure-time activities, exercise frequency, drinking water before going to bed, soaking the foot with hot water (hot baths)before going to bed, all above are related to sleep quality of the elderly. The results of multiple liner analysis indicated that difficulty with initiating sleep, drinking water before going to bed, suffering from disease, income, exercise frequency, the use of hypnotic drugs, easy to wake up and then difficult to fall asleep, room humidity and worrying about future as the main factors that affect the elderly sleep quality,accounted for 64.2 %. The information obtained in interviews revealed that rest time in the apartment, the relationship between the elderly and communication with staff, becomes main effect factors of sleep quality.ConclusionThe sleep quality of senior citizen in elderly apartment is ordinary, needs to be enhanced. The effect factors of sleep quality in elderly include several aspects, such as financial situation, living habits, medication, environment, psychology. The staff in elderly apartment should focus on improving the management in above several aspects for better sleep quality and life quality of senior citizen.
