Objective:To investigate the effects and safety of extracorporeal shock wave(ESWT) for treatment of chronic pelvic pain syndrome(CPPS) related symptoms. Methods:The study adopted Self-control and comparison before and after treatment clinical research method.186 patients with CPPS received ESWT treatments(each 2000 impulses, energy density 0.20~0.24mJ/mm~2,frequency 3.5 Hz)within 4 weeks(once per week). The patient is positioned on his back and the therapy head is coupled on the perineum. The parameters were investigated using validated questionnaires(National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index, NIH-CPSI),serum Prostate-specific antigen(PSA) and prostatic fluid routine examination.Results:1.186 patients completed the NIH-CPSI score,37 patients were tested serum PSA values,30 patients were completed Expressed prostatic secretion(EPS)routine examination.2.After treatment, the total effective rate was 86.56%(161/186) and Significant effective rate is 25.27%(47/186).3.After treatment, the NIH-CPSI scores of pain or disconfort, voiding symptom and quality of life impact had improved significantly(P<0.01);4.After treatment, values of serum PSA had no significantly difference(P>0.05);5.After treatment, the count of WBC in EPS had significantly difference(P<0.01),but the amount of SPL in EPS had no significant difference(P>0.05);6.All patients have no noticeable side effects and anaesthesia was riot required. Conclusion:ESWT is an easy, effective and safe therapy for CPPS.
