objective: To investigate the effects of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in 22 patients suffering from Chronic prostatitis / Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome .Methods: Twenty two (22)patients suffering from CP/CPPS diagnosed by NIH clinical criteria were treated with ESWT treatment from August of 2009 to January of 2001,each patient were treated four times(once per week), each by 2000 impulses, operating voltage range from 11-15KV,25 times in one minutes. ESWT effects on pain, quality of life (QoL),erectile function (EF),and micturition were evaluated. The parameters were investigated using validated questionnaires (National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index [NIH-CPSI], International Prostate Symptom Score [IPSS], International Index of Erectile Function [IIEF], McGill pain questionnaire [MPQ]) before the treatment and 4 weeks after the treatment. Compare the changes of the parameters and study of ESWT in the treatment of CP/CPPS.Results: All patients completed outpatient treatments and follow-ups without any problems. The effective power is 62.63%,31.81%,22.72% according to NIH-CPSI, IPSS and IIEF. There was significant difference in sensory (S),affective(A), total(T),visual analogous scale(VAS) and present pain instensity(PPI) scores(p<0.01) than before the treatment. The Efficacy are statistically significant in relieving pain and improving the quality of life, but not in improving sexual function status and alleviating the symptoms of lower urinary tract obstruction. Conclusion: ESWT is a security, effectively and cheap therapy for the patients who is suffering from CP/CPPS, which can significantly relieve pain and improve the quality of life.
