Smilax china L., named as Jin Gang Teng, is a perennial defoliation liana of Smilax china L. of Liliaceae, whose tuber was used as medicinal materials, sweet in taste, a bit bitter, mild-natured, channel tropism of liver-kidney. It has many pharmacological activities, such as subsiding swelling detoxicating, expelling wind eliminating dampness, analgesic and anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor activities, etc. Smilax china L. is effective in therapy for pelvic inflammatory and other disease in clinical application.Total glycosides parts (short as TGP), the content of total flavonoids and total saponins account for 50% above, which got from Smilax china L.. The traditional technics of extraction and preparation were applied in the existing agents, which has several shortcomings, for instance, low effective component yield, high percent impurity in the product, imperfect quality standards, being a waste of medicinal resource as well as high dose for patients. Therefore, in order to improve the defects mentioned above and increase the technological content of existing preparations as well as establish a basis for the development of other new drugs, advanced technics of extraction, separation and purification should be applied in the research of effective parts of Smilax china L.. At the same time, more attention should be paid to study its pharmacodynamics. In this paper, following work had been done:1. A spectrophotometric measurement was developed for total saponins in Smilax china L. by anisaldehyde-sulfuric-ethanol reagent, the detective wavelength was set at 430 nm.2. HPLC method was established to assay resveratrol, quercitrin in Smilax china L. and quercitrin in TGP respectively.3. Spectrophotometric determination was founded for total flavonoids in TGP of Smilax china L..4. The anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects of TGP of Smilax china L. by Kunming mice were studied. The results showed effective range was 90~810 mg·kg-1(dry extraction) can significantly decrease ear edema induced by xylene and prolong the time of licking the behind feet of mice in hot plate test. That shows TGP of Smilax china L. was an effective parts for anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in the extraction, which display a dose-dependent relationship.5. The result of bacteriostasis tests indicated the TGP could inhibit the growth of E. coli. and S. aureus, with the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) is 6.25mg.ml-1, 3.125mg.ml-1, respectively.6. Antilipemic and antioxidant activity of TGP were investigated. Blood lipid levels in rats with hyperlipidemia resulting from high-fat feeding were determined after oral administration. It produced a significant decrease of total cholesterol, triglycerides of serum, as well as glutamate-oxaloacetate transamimase (GOT or AST), glutamate-pyruvate transamimase (GPT or ALT) of liver. The photo of liver pathologic slices indicated that fat pathological change was obviously improved by TGP. Therefore, the TGP of Smilax china L. has the pharmacodynamics effects of reducing blood lipids and preventing fatty liver. But, the effect of antioxidant effect wasn't observed in this test.
