Objective:The recent researches from western countries indicated that hypercholesterolemia might increase the risk of prostate cancer. Some domestic researches reported that the risk of cancer was negatively related with the plasma cholesterol, while they hadn't specially reported prostate cancer incidence. This study surveyed and compared the content of plasma cholesterol,HDL,LDL in patients with prostate cancer and controls,to investigate whether hypercholesterolemia is associated with prostate cancer overall and by grade,so as to provide reference index for prevention, clinical therapy and prognosis of prostate cancer. Methods:Cases were 229 men with histologically confirmed prostate cancer, aged 50 to 75 years old, they were grouped into two groups according to Gleason score:low-grade(Gleason sum<7) and high-grade(Gleason sum≧7) prostate cancer. Controls were 211 men without clinical cancer who were seen at the same hospital in the same period for an annual physical exam. All the participants were Han ethnic.2m1 veinous blood of every member was collected on an empty stomach, then survey the content of plasma cholesterol in enzymic method, and survey the content of serum HDL and LDL in precipitation method and making the statistical analysis..Results:No significant difference in plasma cholesterol,HDL,LDL were found between prostate cancer group and control,or between low-grade prostate cancer group and high-grade prostate cancer group. The unconditional univariate and multivariable Logistic regression analysis showed no significant association between hypercholesterolemia and prostate cancer,or between hypercholesterolemia and high-grade prostat cancr. Conclusions:there is no significant association between the abnormal level of plasma cholesterol,HDL,LDL and prostate cancer or high-grade prostate cancer. Hypercholesterolemia is not the independent risk factor of prostate cancer or of high-grade prostate cancer.
