Objective:To investigate the primary application of virtual reality(VR) technique in orthopaedics by using VR technique in Dextroscope system to intergrate multiple medical imaging data, and reconstruct 3D image of normal and pathological anatomic structures of orthopaedic diseasesMethods:Multiple medical imaging data including magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic resonance angiograph, magnetic resonance venography and computed tomography collected from 15 patients who suffered orthopaedic diseases in department of orthopaedics in Huashan hospital from September of 2007 to August of 2008,were transferred to Dextroscope system.3D image of anatomic structures were reconstructed and intergrated.A stereoscopic 3-D tools accessible inside the Dextroscope workspace enabled users to deal with the virtual image of 15 patients' 3D anatomic structures. We attempted to design preoperative plan and simulated operative approach simply, which was compared with real situation in operation. Results:Virtual reality technique was succeed in intergrating multiple medical imaging data and reconstructing 3D anatomic structures of 15 orthopaedic patients. The extraction of bone and skin received the best effect. The reconstruction of vessel displayed well, too.The visualization of Soft tissue such as muscle was not satisfied. The display of tumor tissue depends on the characteristic of tumor, whose effect was moderate overall. The image of MRI or MRA,on which some structures couldn't be displayed, was effected by bleeding in acute stage of 4 trauma patients. The effect of reconstruction of vessel and soft tissue around the injury was reduced enormously. The individual anatomic structures of 15 orthopaedic patients was reconstructed successfully.Dextroscope system could simulate operative approach simply. The procedure was simple and crude, which was far away from the real surgery process. But the images reconstructed by virtual reality was the same to the anatomic structures in real operation basically.Conclusions:1.Virtual reality technique can intergrate multiple medical imaging data and reconstruct normal and pathological anatomic structures successfully, which provide more information for clinical diagnosis and treatment.Virtual anatomic teaching is a trend in future, whose technique is not mature in application right now.2.Virtual surgery system has a wide future, but it is far away from the real surgery process currently. The restricted fact of virtual surgery system's development is multiple, which need investigate further.
