Objective:The aim of this study is to mathematically measure the radius of the femoral articulating line from the side view knee X-ray and analyzing the physiology feature of normal Chinese knee, and to offer reference for Chinese knee prothesis designing .Methods:Fifteen males and fifteen females participants were included in the study.,those age 20-40 years,non-obese person, body mass index(BMI)<24 kg/m~2,negative history of right knee injury, complains of pattelofemoral pain symptoms,or neurological or neuromuscular disorders, full range of right knee active motions ,and grade 5 of hamstrings and quadriceps muscle force, negative Lachman's, posterior drawer, varus/valgus tests. On the side view X-ray of the right knee, the tangents were drawn on the medial and lateral condylar curves at 0°an 90°articular contact point. Then, the lines perpendicular to the two tangents above at tangent spot. Calculate the radius for each 10°segment of the medial and lateral condylar curves. Results :The radius of medial and lateral condylar of health Chinese right knee for each 10°segment. The centers of all radius of curvature are, in fact, the location of the lateral axis at different angulations while the knee flexion and extend .The moving locus of curvature center is the moving distance and direction of the lateral axis. The line which connects the ends of all the radiuses (centers of all curve segments), so called "voulta" is letter "J" shaped. Males have significantly bigger femoral condyles and radius of its condylar curves in comparison to females(p<0.05).Conclusions:The empirical data of the radius of medial and lateral femoral candyles offered by this study can be used for delineation of the mathematical knee modeling and designing knee prothesis fitted Chinese. The medial condyle is bigger and more oval than the lateral. Chinese have smaller femoral candyles in camparison to Caucasian. Gender differences in radiuses of the condylar curves were noted.
