Objective:To classify and analyze the different neck dissection on patients with squamous cell carcinoma of tongue (SCCOT) and compare the effectiveness of different neck dissection modalities. Methods:Complete clinical and follow-up data of 39 consecutive patients with squamous cell carcinoma of tongue ,they have been therapied in our hospital in 1995-2003 were included in this study ,treatment and following- up records were reviewed retrospectively .gaving different neck dissection after resection of primary tumor. For the 39 consecutive patients, 12 patients with suprahyoid neck dissections(SND) and supraomohyoid neck dissections (SOHND), 3 patients with modified radical neck dissections (MRNDs) .10 patients with radical neck dissections(RNDs). and 14 patients with combined radical neck dissections(CRND) . Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the survival rate. statistical analysis was conducted using analysis of log-rank to determine the differences between the groups. A special focus was on the effectiveness of different neck dissection modalities. cox-regression method was used to estimate the influence of the age, sex, cancer cell differentiation, pathology Staging and transfer of the lymph nodes to the survival rate. Results:the 12 patients with HND and SOHND , 13 patients with RNDs, and 14 patients with CRND, their five years survival rate are 52.20%;51.05%; 55.32% respectively. there's no significant difference of survival rate among these groups( P>0.05). cox-regression shows that except for age and sex ,cancer cell differentiation, pathology Staging and transfer of the lymph nodes has an influence on survival rate( P<0.05). Conclusion:to the patients with squamous cell carcinoma of tongue ,we should treaded according to the TNM stage system. Especially on the transformation of the lymph nodes. In order to got a high life quality under the certify of the survival rate .
