ObjectiveTo investigate the expressions of the matrix matalloproteinaise-2(MMP-2) and the tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinaise-2(TIMP-2) in the esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and their roles in the differention and the pathogenesis of ESCC to study their heterogenous expression in ESCC and the reason of heterogenous expression.MethodsThe expression of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were studied by tissue microarry method in 58 ESCC tissue. The immunohistochemical results were analyzed using the software of SPSS 11.5 by means of Chi-Square test and u test.Resultsâ‘ The expression of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 in ESCC was higher than of in non-tumor tissues. The result was of statistical significance .â‘¡The expression of MMP-2 was related to the malignant degree and lymph node metastases (P<0.05). The expression of TIMP-2 increased significantly in ESCC tissues with lymph node metastases compared to that without lymph node metastases(P<0.05),but had no relationship to the malignant degree(P>0.05).â‘¢MMP-2 and TIMP-2 expressed in all blood vessels of non-tumor esophageal tissue, but their expression intensity were higher in blood vessels of ESCC.The result was of statisitical significance (u=289.5,P<0.01; u=373.5,P<0.01) .ConclusionsMMP-2 and TIMP-2 expressed negatively or poorly in none-tumor esophageal tissue, but intensively in ESCC; The difference was significant. The expression level of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 was positively correlated with malignant degree of ESCC. These two may serve as markers to judge the clinical prognosis of ESCC. MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were closely related with progression and heterogeneity of ESCC. MMP-2 and TIMP-2 expressed in all vascular endothelial cells of small vessel and expressed much more in immature and new vessels. These two might be closely related with angiogenesis of esophageal normal tissue and angiopoiesis of ESCC.
