Petasites tatewakianus kitam has been studied in this paper.Petasites species have very high values in medication and economy. Many foreign experts pay more attention to petasites species, but studies on petasites are few in China. The main chemical components of this genus are bakkenolide, eremophielolide and oplopane sesquiterpenes, etc. In addition, there phenols, triterpenoides, and other types of compounds have also been isolated. Sesquiterpenoids have strong anti-tumor, cardiac, neurological toxicity, antimalarial, antibacterial activities. The paper is divided into three parts. In the first part, the phytochemical researchs of petasites species were reviewed. In the second part, the volatile oil of petasites tatewakianus Kitam is analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method, and 52 compounds have been identified, accounting for 99.96% of the total amount of volatile oil. The main components include ketones, alcohols and so on.In the third part, the secondary metabolites of the root of petasites tatewakianus Kitam were investigated. Fourteen compounds are isolated by means of silica gel column chromatography (CC), preparative thin layer chromatography (PTLC) and recrystallization etc. Their structurs are elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods (1H-NMR,13C-NMR, DEPT, HMBC, IR and X-Ray).
