Background of theorySpinal cord injury (SCI) is caused by external factors directly or indirectly, at the damaged corresponding segments of the spinal cord, dysfunction emerges, such as various motor, sensory and sphincter dysfunction, dystonia and pathological reflex. The degree of spinal cord injury and clinical manifestations were decided by the location and nature of primary injury. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), SCI is belong to " lumbago", " flaccidity", "body indolence" and other diseases and syndromes.because of blood stasis, that were caused by trauma. Constipation is one of the main complications in the rehabilitation period spinal cord injury. How to treat this complication is still problem. Constipation was complained as the greatest impact on quality of life by about 1/3 of patients. In recent years, awareness of constipation after SCI was not enough. The pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of constipation after SCI, have been reported little, whether on the basis of clinical or experimental studies. Its pathogenesis is still not very clear. Therefore, the study of constipation after SCI is of great significance in improving quality of patients'life and returning to society. Some experts believed that the reason might be that the transit time of the colon was delayed. There is a lack of very effective treatments, currently. In western medicine, most of the treatments are used to against the response, such as oral laxatves, astrointestinal motility drug, rectal suppository, small enema, colostomy, etc. These treatments can not radically solve the problem of constipation after SCI, and they have serious side effects or cause trauma on the body. Therefore, searching for a safe and effective solution for the problem of constipation after SCI becomes important. Based on the theory of TCM therapies, jade and salt indirect moxibustion with traditional Chinese drugs (TCD) on acupoints, skillfully combines the characteristics of acupoints, moxibustion and TCD, and can play through the meridians, warming yang to relax the bowels for SCI patients with constipation. It is an external treatment therapy of TCM, simple manipulated, and non-invasive to the body of patients. It should be used in long-term rehabilitation. In this article, the clinical efficacy of jade and salt indirect moxibustion with TCD on traumatic SCI patients in rehabilitation period with constipation was explored, so that it can be promoted to be used in the clinic.ObjectiveTo studying the effectiveness of jade and salt indirect moxibustion with TCD on SCI patients in rehabilitation period with constipation, discuss the relationship between constipation in the rehabilitation period of SCI and transit speed of colon, and provide a safe and effective treatment in clinic.Methods64 patients were chose from the nerves rehabilitation department of Rehabilitation Hospital of Guangdong Province, who met the criterion for the study. The patients were randomly divided into comprehensive rehabilitation training plus jade and salt moxibustion with TCD group(treatment group) and the comprehensive Rehabilitation training group (control group), through stratified random method. There were 32 patients in each group. Randomized controlled trial was carried through. After 2 months of treatment, patients were evaluated. Research the change of dysporia score table and colonic transit test before and after treatment, and apply statistical methods for analysis.ResultsAfter 2 months treatment, the results suggested that, compared in each group, in the dysporia score table, scores were significantly reduced with significant difference (P<0.05); compared between two groups, the treatment group was better than the control group with significant difference (P<0.05). The general effect of the treatment group was superior to the control group, with significant difference (P<0.05). In the colonic transit test, the transmission speed of both groups were improved and the number of the barium bar were reduced with significant difference (P<0.05). After treatment, the number of barium bar in the right of the colon area of the treatment group was smaller than the control group with significant difference (P<0.05).ConcluusionsComprehensive rehabilitation training is an effective method for constipation after SCI, but added with jade and salt moxibustion with TCD, the efficacy can be better. It can be said jade and salt moxibustion with TCD is a simple, effective, without side effects treatment for constipation in the rehabilitation period of SCI, and worthy of clinical use.
