Objective Evaluation of the efficacy of transcatheter hepatic arterial chemoembolization (TACE) combined with systemic chemotherapy for liver metastases from colorectal cancer in order to explore an effective non-surgical treatmentMethods A total of 68 colorectal liver metastasis patients were divided into two groups named TACE combined with systemic chemotherapy group (n=23) and systemic chemotherapy alone group (n=45). The clinical data of patients were collected. systemic chemotherapy alone group take the FOLFOX4, FOLFIRI or XELOX treatment program. TACE combined with systemic chemotherapy group take the TACE-Systemic chemotherapy-TACE treatment programs, two TACE treatment interval 4 weeks,1 times systemic chemotherapy take FOLFOX4,Xeloda,5-FU+CF or 5-FU+CF+ HCPT program between TACE treatments.Comparison of recent efficacy and side effects survival follow-up results were performed between the two groups. Results (1) The recent efficacy rate in the TACE combined with systemic chemotherapy group was 60.9%, versus 33.3% in the systemic chemotherapy alone group, means a significant statistics difference (p>0.05). (2) The median survival time in the TACE combined with systemic chemotherapy group were 20 months, versus 17 months in the systemic chemotherapy alone group. (3) the 1-,2-,3-,and4-year survival rates in the TACE combined with systemic chemotherapy group were 82.6%,34.8%,17.4% and 0%,versus59.6%,193%,193% and 0% in the systemic chemotherapy alone group. an improved recent survival inl-,2-,3-year comparied with systemic chemotherapy, means a significant statistics difference (p> 0.05). (4) Adverse reactions:The TACE combined with systemic chemotherapy group develop embolization syndrome such as brief fever, mild abdominal pain, other adverse reactions such as bone marrow suppression, gastrointestinal reactions and liver function minor damage were similar to the systemic chemotherapy alone group, the two group have no significant statisties difference (all p>0.05).The TACE combined with systemic chemotherapy group have no adverse reaction which can not be tolerated or affect the further treatmentConclusion TACE combined with systemic chemotherapy is an alternative, safe and effective trentment for patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer unresectable or unwilling to be resected. Recent therapeutic effect of TACE combined with systemic chemotherapy is better than systemic chemotherapy alone.TACE combined with systemic chemotherapy has an extended median survival time, an improved 1-,2-,3-year survival rates and less serious adverse reactions comparied with systemic chemotherapy.
