Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), one of the most common chronic complications of diabetes, has a very high incidence. The main clinical manifestations of DPN are limb numbness, pain, chills, feeling diminished, weakness, muscle atrophy, pruritus and other performances. It can even lead to lower extremity gangrene and amputation, and impact on patients quality of life seriously. Currently, it is still uncertain to its pathogenesis on modern medicine, and considered the result of many factors, mainly related to metabolism disorder and vascular damage. Clinically, there is no specific treatment of it on Western medicine. The treatments of DPN are focused on the cause of it and the symptomatic treatment. But the results are not satisfactory. On the other way, Chinese medicine in the treatment of DPN shows better efficacy and advantages, for its better efficacy, less side effects, less drug resistance, much cheaper. Therefore, the use of Chinese medicine treatment of DPN in recent years caused widespread concern in the academic circles of diabetes.DPN is the disease name on modern medicine. There is no description of DPN on traditional Chinese medicine, but similar disease was recorded in the ancient literature. The descriptions about the symptoms of limb numbness, pain, chills, feeling diminished, weakness, muscle atrophy and pruritus are here and there. Classical prescription is the father of other prescriptions, and praised for its immediate effect. But, the number of the report about the use of classical prescription on the treatment of DPN is very few, with very limited side. In order that the classical prescription could be better used in clinic, the paper concluded the relevant descriptions, which come from the book of Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Disease and Miscellaneous Disease, about the treatment of the common symptoms of DPN, and then, they were combined with my tutor's experience and the clinical applications about the classical prescriptions used in the treatment of DPN. AT last, the pathology of DPN and the common classical prescriptions which can be used to treat DPN came out. It was pointed out that the occurrence of DPN is relevant to qi, blood, yin and yang deficiency, and also relevant to the stanagtion of wind pathogen, cold pathogen, dampness, heat pathogen, fluid retention and static blood. Yin deficiency, qi and blood deficiency cause the dystrophy of tendons, limbs and skin; yang deficiency and coagulated cold cause limbs loss temperature; wind pathogen, cold pathogen and dampness block the meridian, or dampness and blood stasis block the meridian, and it causes the dystrophy of tendons, limbs and skin; intense heat consumes yin or burns meridian leading to limbs dystrophy, those are the reasons lead to the occurrence of DPN. There are many classical prescriptions can be used in treating one symptom of DPN. The occurrence of DPN is not due to a single pathogenesis but multi-pathogenesises. Therefore, DPN's condition is often complicated. It greatly reduces the number of classical prescriptions which can be used on the treatment of DPN that the symptoms of limbs numbness, pain, itching, cold and fatigue often occur at the same time on the patients who got DPN. Combining with my tutor's experience and the related reports about the treatment of DPN by classical prescriptions, i summarize the classical prescriptions commonly used in the treatment of DPN and analyze the condition it can be used about each prescription. So, they can be better applied to clinical practice. Finally, medical cases are provided for being certified. This paper concluded the relevant descriptions, which come from the book of Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Disease and Miscellaneous Disease, about the treatment of the common symptoms of DPN, and then, they were combined with my tutor's experience and the clinical applications about the classical prescriptions used in the treatment of DPN. At last, it also discussed the law of treatment based on syndrome differentiation about using classical prescriptions to deal with DPN. It's hoped that the classical prescription could be better used in clinical practice and research.
