Plants of the genus Inula (Compositae family) have been used as traditional herbal medicines throughout the world for a long period, and have previously been reported to yield a variety of sesquiterpenes, which accounting for their bioactivities such as anti-inflammatory, antitumor and bactericidal effects.Inula lineariifolia Turcz. is widely distributed in China and had been used as the traditional Chinese medicine"JinFeiCao". However, the research and application of this plant are limited for such side effect as disgorging. Up to now only two compounds have been reported from this plant. The current study aimed to search for novel bioactive compounds from Inula lineariifolia Turcz, and had led to the isolation of 33 compounds, including 15 sesquiterpenoids, 3 flavones, 5 Steroides and 9 other compounds. Their structures were identified by extensive spectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D-NMR experiments or by comparing their spectral data with those of published in literatures. Those compounds were identified as follows: xx-1 lineariifolianone xx-2 britanlin C xx-3 5α, 6α-Eposy-2α-acetoxy-4α-hydroxyl-1β, 7α-guaia-11(13)-en-12, 8α-olide.xx-4 8β-Propionyl-inusoniolide xx-5 6α-Hydroxy-tomentosin xx-6 inuchinenolide A xx-7 tomentosin xx-8 2α-Acetoxy-4α-hydroxyl-1β-guaia-11(13),10(14)-dien-12,8α-olide xx-9 gaillardin xx-10 4-epi-isoinuviscolide xx-11 xerantholide xx-12 lineariifolianoid xx-13 4-epipulchellin-2-O-acetate xx-14 2-Desoxy-4-epi-pucgellin xx-15 lineariifolianoids A xx-16 8,9,10-Trihydroxythymol xx-17 pyromeconic acid xx-18 dehydrovomifoli xx-19 eupatin xx-20 spinacetin xx-21 hispidulin xx-22 (+)-syringaresinol xx-23α-spinasterol xx-24α-Spinasterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside xx-25β-sitosterol xx-26 daucosterol xx-27 taraxasteryl acetate xx-28 pyromeconic acid xx-29 4-hydroxy-benzaldehude xx-30 vanllin polymer xx-31 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxy-benzaldehude xx-32 4-hydroxy-2,6-dimethoxy-benzaldehude xx-33 1-octadecanolAll the compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time. Among them, xx-1, xx-3, xx-4, xx-5, xx-8, xx-12, and xx-15 were new compounds. All the sesquiterpenes were evaluated the inhibitory activites on the LPS-induced NO production in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Among them, pseudoguaianolide sesquiterpenoids xx-12, xx-13 and xx-14 exhibited potent inhibitory effects with IC50 values range of 0.10?0.25μM.
