Objective To investigate the effects of adiponectin on expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) induced by tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in rat vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs).Methods Incubated with 10ng/ml of TNF-α,VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 release levels in VSMCs were detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blot analysis respectively.Results Compared to control, VSMCs treated with 10ng/ml of TNF-αled to a marked increase in both VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 expression (P<0.01). Adiponectin significantly inhibited TNF-α-induced protein and mRNA expression of VCAM-1 and ICAM-1.Conclusion Adiponectin involved in anti-atherosclerosis may have effect on inhibition of expression of VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 in VSMCs .
