Objective: Through retrospective analysis of the clinical histories of traumatic carotid cavernous fistulae treated with new and old types detachable balloon to compare the recurrence rate, ICA patency rate and complication incidence both side. Through analyzing and discussing the texture, structural design and the reason for recurrence, ICA occlusion and complications, to summarize the experience that how to lower the recurrence rate, reduce the complications and raise the ICA patency rate when embolization treatment for TCCF with new type detachable balloons. Methods: 79 cases with TCCF treated with detachable balloons were recruited from First Affiliated Hospital of Hebei Medical University between August 2003 and September 2010. 34 cases were treated with old type detachable balloons while 45 cases were treated with new type detachable balloons. Statistically contrastive analyze the recurrence rate, ICA patency rate and complication incidence both side.Results:1 The ICA patency rate comparison the old type detachable group obtains a ICA patency rate of 91.2%, the new type detachable group obtains a ICA patency rate of 93.3%, the comparison has no significant difference (χ~2=0.005, P>0.05).2 The recurrence rate comparison the old type detachable group obtains a recurrence rate of 17.6%, the new type detachable group obtains a recurrence rate of 2.2%, the comparison has the significant difference (χ~2=3.96, P<0.05).3 The complication incidence comparison the old type detachable group obtains a complication incidence of 38.2%, the new type detachable group obtains a complication incidence of 11.1%, the comparison has the significant difference (χ~2=8.10, P<0.05).Conclusions:1 The recurrence rate and the complication incidence can be reduced through improving the detachable balloon itself and the embolization technique.2 Endovascular embolization treatment for traumatic carotid cavernous fistula with new-type detachable latex balloon is a effective and safe therapy.
