Objective:To investigate the correlation between insulin resistance and breast cancer by means of fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, C-peptide levels and lnHOMA-IRI.Methods:1. From October 2009 to February 2010, a total of 117 patients with newly-diagnosed breast diseases were collected in the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, including 52 cases with breast cancer and 65 cases of breast benign diseases. All the cases met a certain criteria. Information of the patients was collected by a standard questionnaire. Current heights, weights and circumferences of the waist and hips were measured for all participants, and then the BMI and WHR were also calculated. The fasting blood glucose was measured by Biochemistry Auto-machine 7600-020. The Fasting serum insulin and C-peptide were measured by Automatic Chemiluminescence. Insulin resistance index was calculated by the method of homeostasis model assessment(HOMA).The ER and PR express status were tested by the Ultra SensitiveTM S-P immunohistochemistry.2. Data evaluation was carried out by the SPSS 17.0 sofeware. A binary logistic regresstion was carried out to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs). The statistical significance level was set at 0.05Results:1. A significant difference of age, weight, BMI, waist and hip circumferences, menarche age, menopause age and menopause status was found between the patients with breast cancer and patients with breast benign diseases (P<0.05), but no differences of hight, Waist-Hip Ratio, marriage status or occupation. (P>0.05)2. There was a statistically significant and positive correlation between the fasting C-peptide level and BMI, or the fasting blood glucose, lnHOMA-IRI and circumferences of waist (P<0.05). No correlation was found between serum insulin with the age, hight, weight, BMI, waist and hip circumferences, or WHR (P>0.05)3. The patients with breast cancer suffered higher fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, C-peptide levels and lnHOMA-IRI than those with breast benign diseases (P<0.01)4. The menoarche age, menopause status, serum insulin and lnHOMA-IRI were significantly associated with the breast cancer, (OR=5.529,95%CI=2.023-15.115), (OR=13.644,95%CI=3.379-55.103), (OR=1.234,95%CI=1.025-1.486), (OR=5.343,95%CI=1.405-20.322), respectively. C-peptide level was poorly associated with breast cancer(OR=1.004,95%CI=1.000-1.007).5. The fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, C-peptide levels, and lnHOMA-IRI were not significantly different compared with the different menopause status, tumor size, lymph nodes metastasis or ER, PR expression status of patients with breast cancer. (P>0.05)Conclusions:1. The patient with breast cancer suffered higher fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, C-peptide levels, and lnHOMA-IRI than those with breast benign diseases.2. Insulin resistance was an independent risk factor for breast cancer.3. The elevated fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, C-peptide levels, and lnHOMA-IRI in breast cancer patients were not related to the menopause status, tumor size, lymph nodes metastasis or ER, PR expression status.
