Objective To investigate the effects of curcumin on proliferation,Cell Cycle Status and apoptosis of human hepatocellular carcinoma SMMC-7721 cells in vitro. Methods The human hepatocellular carcinoma SMMC-7721 cells was cultured to logarithm growing period and treated with curcumin of different concentration(5μmol/L,10μmol/L,20μmol/L,40μmol/L,80μmol/L,160μmol/L) and different time (24,48,72h), The inhibition rates of cells were detected through MTT assay; the cell cycle status and the apoptosis rates of cells were tested by flow cytometry; Results MTT method revealed that Curcumin could inhibit the proliferation of hepatocellular carcinoma SMMC-7721 cells in a dose-and time-dependent manner. The tumor cell apopotic rate in curcumin group was significantly higher than those in control group. Furthermore, flow cytometry showed that the apoptical ratio of curcumin group was increased obviously with the adding up of Curcumin than that of control group. But also showed Curcumin did not produce cycle arrest. Conclusion Effect of curcumin on human hepatocellular carcinoma SMMC-7721 cells significantly inhibited the cells proliferation and induced apoptosis, but did not produce cycle arrest.
