Objective:To investigate the effects of curcumin ointment on inhib-iting the scar formation after experimental glaucoma filtration surgery in rabbits.Methods:Twenty-seventh rabbits(27 eyes) were divided into control group, matrix(placebo) group , and drug group randomly, 9 cases in each group. Trabeculectomy was performed in all right eyes of rabbits. 0.1g ointment was given to drug group and 0.1g matrix were given to ma-trix group, but control group received no treatment. Measured the in-traocular pressure in Preoperative, postoperative 1d, 3d, 7d,14d,28d and observed the filtering bleb. Then we executed rabbits in postoperative 7d, 14d, 28d in batchs respectively and enucleated their right eyes.By histo-pathology and immunohistochemistry.we can observed fibro-blasts,collagen and inflame cells of operative area with technology.Results:1 Filtering bleb: A functional filtering bleb can be observed in every group after postoperative 3 d and 7 d; after 2 d the blebs of control group were calm, diffuse, with micro-shaped gap, after 5 d a few of the filtering bleb were dispersive, after 10 d were wrapped, with scar adhesion, after 14 d the surgical areas were largely covered by scar. The filtration paths of dug group were still clear, and blebs were obvious after 14 d,At 28th day, there was only a small amount of remaining bleds. But there were not sig-nificant statistical difference among every group in every time point.2 Intraocular pressure: The IOP were no significant difference (P >0.05) among three groups in Preoperative, postoperative 1d, 3d, 28d, but had significant difference (P <0.05)in postoperative 7d, 14d, 21d.3 Inflammatory cells: Postoperative 7d, drug group had significant difference compared to control group and matrix group (P < 0.05), while the control group and matrix group had not significantly different (P >0.05).Postoperative 14d, 28d among the three groups there were no statis-tical significance (P >0.05).4 Collagen: The lesser collagen can be observed in Immunohisto-chemistry Slice of Curcumin group after 7d, 4d, 28d, there were more dense arrangement of collagen type I in filtration paths of matrix group and control group, and had significant difference compared Curcumin group with matrix group and control group, but collagen typeâ…¢is no significant difference among the three groups in every time point.5 Fibroblasts and myofibroblasts: Fibroblasts and myofibroblasts of drug group had significant difference compared to control group and matrix group (P < 0.05) in every time point. Conclusion:1 In this experiment,with the examination of pathological,we discov-ered that the process of scarring after glaucoma filtration was consistent with describtion of the literature,therefore the experimental model of the present experiment was feasible.2 By the research of pharmacology and stability of curcumin, showed that it was configured as eye ointment for the anti-trabeculectomy scarring was an effective and feasible method.3. Curcumin ointment is an effective drug that can reduce the amount of inflammations, inhibit proliferation of fibroblast and myofibroblast, and decrease secretion of collagen I. It can slow down the process of filtering bleb scarring.
