Coursebook plays a very important role in the teaching and learning of college English. Coursebook evaluation is beneficial to both the teachers and the coursebook writers, for it can provide useful information or advices for selection and development of coursebooks.This thesis intends to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the two sets of coursebooks published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, namely 1) College English Integrated Course (new edition), 2) New Century College English Integrated Course. The two sets of coursebook are respectively complied after the implementation of the 1999 College English Syllabus and 2007 College English Curriculum Requirements. This thesis is devided into five chapters. The first chapter describes the background, purpose, significance and methods of this thesis.The second chapter summarizes the research of the coursebooks and it outlines the role of the coursebooks in the English teaching, and the introduction of the recent research on the editing and the evaluation of the coursebooks in the world.The third chapter conducts a static evaluation of the two courses through contrasting the two in terms of their development backgrounds, guiding ideologies, development principles, course structures and systems, language knowledge, language skills, etc.In the fourth chapter, the differences and similarities between the two are concluded after analyzing the data collected from interviews and questionnaires. And finally, suggestions towards teachers and course developers on the use and improvement of the New Century College English Integrated Course are provided in order to meet the current need of English teaching.The fifth chapter systematical reviews the whole process and the conclusion of this study, and also proposes some issues to be resolved in the future study and work.
