College English is an important required course in higher education in China. Textbook is a major component in the implementation of an English course. With the reform and further development of college English education, Guidelines for College English Teaching (Draft Version,2014) (Hereinafter referred to briefly as Guidelines) was issued by. As one of college English textbooks based on it, New Target College English Coursebook (Hereinafter referred to briefly as New Target) was still in the editorial period during this research process. The study attempts to evaluate New Target based on Cheng Xiaotang's framework and some of Cunningsworth's (2002) evaluation scheme. This thesis tries to answer two research questions below:(1) In terms of the internal and external evaluation, what are the characteristics of New Target College English Integrated Coursebook (Trial Edition)?(2) In what aspects are teachers and students satisfied with New Target College English Integrated Coursebook (Trial Edition)?Based on the thorough analysis of current situation of college English education in our country and comparison of many relevant studies on textbook evaluation, the author combines an analysis framework for this evaluation, which has been constructed from two aspects: internal evaluation and external evaluation. The findings are shown as follow:1. New Target has four strengths:(1) The principles of New Target are reasonable and up-to-date; it provides a large amount of authentic and novelty materials (input); (2) It emphasizes language skills training; (3) The various task designs and scientific difficult degree prove its worth in learning values; (4) It cultivates students' ability of critical thinking and cross-cultural communication. However, there are some limitations. The reading materials are a little difficult and the number of new vocabulary is too large. The quantity and difficulty of reading and writing task are a little beyond some learners' ability.2. From the analysis of questionnaires and textbook evaluation, New Target is basically suitable for new college English teaching and meets students' and teachers'needs for cultivating students' comprehensive language skills. Students and teachers are more satisfied with task of reading, writing and translating.The compilers improve the final version after having received the above feedbacks from this study. Due to the small selection of samples, the study itself has some limitations, which need to be further adjusted and improved. This study probes into the compilation and application of New Target. For the selection and evaluation of other foreign language textbooks, it also has certain things for reference.
