Individuals always live under the influence of a certain culture; when they gradually cultivate a sense of attachment to this culture, they start to identify with it and acquire their cultural identity. Since the opening of Chinese ports in 1843, waves of people immigrated into Shanghai and attempted to adapt to the local culture. During this process, immigrants experienced intense conflict between their original cultural identity and contact cultural identity, which is one of the themes many intercultural communication theorists are probing into. The present study will put the immigrated daughters-in-law of Shanghai family under the spot light and attempt to study the status and dynamic of their cultural identity. The author will adopt a qualitative methodology, specifically internet-based interview methods and a grounded theory approach. Interview questionnaires are designed based on a comprehensive historical and inter-disciplinary review of the identity literatures in fields of socio-psychology, communication psychology and cultural psychology. Grounded in the collected data, the author explores and analyzes the status and dynamic of cultural identity in four aspects:(1) the perception into the current status of their cultural identity; (2) the dynamic of cultural identity construction under the socio-psychology paradigm; (3) the dynamic of cultural identity construction under the communication psychology paradigm; (4) the dynamic of cultural identity construction under the cultural psychology paradigm. At last, dozens of hypotheses will be brought up from these four dimensions, which will serve as starting point or basis for further research. The present study mainly aims to reflect the status and dynamic of the immigrated daughters-in-law's cultural identity, to enhance the immigrated daughters-in-law's awareness about their cultural identity and to enrich the studies on this group and literatures on identity, intercultural marriage and women studies.
