Metaphor is a common linguistic phenomenon, which has been studied for a long time. Metaphor has been studied from different approaches: comparison theory, interaction theory, mapping theory and conceptual blending theory. Now it shows the interdisciplinary trend. This thesis studies the similarities and differences of the usages of metaphors in English and Chinese basketball news reports from the aspect of Indurkhya's Interactionist Theory. This study objects are selected from basketball news reports in China Daily and Sports Daily during 08-09 season of NBA and CBA, and then classified according to Indurkhya's Interactionist Theory. Then the frequency and occurrence of the different metaphors are analyzed so as to find out their similarities and differences in Chinese and English news reports and the reasons. This study finds out that in English and Chinese basketball news reports, the similarities in use of metaphors come from metaphor origins and same cognitive surroundings, while the differences come from the different cultural and language use. The results show that Indurkhya's theory is suitable partially, that is, metaphors are the result of interaction between conceptual world and reality, while the other aspect of the theory----similarity-creating metaphors are the basis of the cognition cannot be proved.
